A Call Comes Ringing

Sheet music

WORDS: Harriet E. Jones, 1908; rev. Ryan Cornett, 2024

MUSIC: William Walker, 1854; Ryan Cornett, 2024

TUNE: INVITATUS (C.M.D.)

1.

A call comes ringing from the throne;

O Christian, do you hear?

Sounding for all the Fathers own:

"Go, preach a Kingdom near."

(Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 10:7, Luke 10:2, Hebrews 12:25)

Refrain

Go forth in holy armor clad,

Christ's crimson flag unfurled;

Heeding the call, your Sov'reign's call,

Go forth and win the world.

(Ephesians 6:11, 2 Timothy 2:3-4, 2 Corinthians 5:20, Psalm 60:4, Romans 10:15)

2.

It was for this His life He gave,

For sinners crucified;

Gathering near lost souls to save,

Go tell it far and wide.

(Mark 10:45, Luke 19:10, 1 Timothy 1:15, John 20:21, Acts 1:8)

3.

Go forth, a brave, united band,

All girded for the fray;

Stand firm until you take the land,

And thus the call obey.

(Philippians 1:27, 1 Corinthians 16:13, Joshua 1:9, 2 Timothy 4:7, Hebrews 10:36)

About the Hymn

I came across this little-known hymn text by Harriet E. Jones and was struck by its urgent, missional focus. Though some of the phrasing showed its age, the heart of the message was clear: the Church is called to proclaim Christ boldly, with the authority of her risen King and the nearness of His Kingdom.

Around the same time, I discovered William Walker's obscure tune INVITATION—a stirring melody from the Southern Harmony tradition that never quite caught on, likely because it never resolves to the tonic. Still, its strength and character seemed perfectly suited to Jones's text. To provide the sense of resolution and congregational energy it needed, I composed a refrain section and titled the revised setting INVITATUS (Latin for "invited"), a nod both to the original tune and to the hymn's central theme of being called and sent.
