The Sun Is Sinking

Sheet music

WORDS: Laura Wade Rice, 1895; alt. Ryan Cornett, 2025

MUSIC: Ryan Cornett, 2024

TUNE: CASARI (10.10.10.6)

1.

The sun is sinking o'er the mountains far,

To shine in lands that lie beyond our sight;

Thine own, O Father, all the nations are;

O, give to them Thy Light.

2.

Earth hath no shadow like Thy shrouded face,

No shining sun like knowledge that Thou art.

Shine forth, great Light! In every darkened place;

Make glad the weary heart.

3.

Shine in Thy saints who bear Thy holy light,

Both near to us and those who dwell afar.

Since Thou art with them, may they know no night;

Be Thou their guiding star.

4.

When Heaven's morning dawns upon us all,

With earthly sun and shade forever past,

From ev'ry land Thou wilt Thy children call

To dwell in light at last.

About the Hymn

I found Rice's obscure text (it appears in only one hymnal) and felt it deserved to be sung! The imagery is that of light and shadows, with every stanza evoking a sense of longing. I thought—of all things!—of the dwarves from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth. So I composed the melody unmistakeably inspired by the songs Thorin Oakenshield's party sang before setting out for the Lonely Mountain and that Gimli might have sung while navigating the mines of Moria.

The sense of mission and hope captured by Rice in this text is inspiring, and my prayer is that believers will enjoy and be edified by this hymn for many years to come.
